Buy Canadian from these terrific homegrown brands

As the tariff war between Canada and the United States continues, many Canadians are making an increased effort to buy Canadian. With that in mind, today’s post highlights several terrific Canadian brands that may be new to you.

Note to my American friends and readers. I love and appreciate you! It’s not personal. Some of these companies ship to the United States, so I encourage you to check them out.

Taming my reflex to support the online giants

Since increasing my focus on sustainability and decluttering, I buy very little. Although I am a mindful shopper, I’ve learned there’s a reason the online giants do so well. They are just so darn convenient.

As I try to support Canadian companies when I do need to buy something, I’ve had to work hard to tame my reflex to grab my iPad and jump to the most convenient option. It takes a bit of research, but I’ve learned that, in almost all cases, we have other options. There are valid alternatives to the online giants run by greedy oligarchs, and I’m delighted to share some of them with you today.

Canadian brands I love

Here are six Canadian companies that I love. Some of them sell products made in other countries, but the companies are all Canadian owned. And many of their stories are innovative and inspiring.

Note: This is NOT a paid endorsement of any of these products.

Pure Anada (Makeup, Skin Care, Personal Care)

I discovered Pure Anada several years ago when I was searching for a refillable makeup compact. I have been buying from them ever since. All of their products are handmade in Manitoba from natural organic ingredients.

I use their mineral foundation, blush, eyeshadow, eye and lip liner pencils. And I recently discovered their foot balm stick which I absolutely love.

Pure Anada offers free shipping within Canada and the United States on orders over $75 CDN,

Well.ca (Wellness, Personal Care, Cleaning, Healthy Foods)

Based just up the road from here in Guelph, Ontario, well.ca started originally as an online pharmacy. Since then, it has grown to a thriving online business offering a variety of personal care, cleaning, healthy pantry items, baby products, and wellness essentials. And, they offer a huge selection of green and natural products—many of them by Canadian brands.

They offer fast, reliable, free shipping across Canada on orders over $35.

Curly Hair Solutions (Products for curly hair)

If you’re “blessed” with curly hair like mine, you know the importance of finding styling products that work. I heard about Curly Hair Solutions many years ago from a conversation with my curly-topped co-workers.

The company was founded in 1985 by Toronto Hairstylist Jonathon Torch, who recognized the unique needs of curly hair and set out to develop a product to tame the frizz while preserving the curls. Curl Keeper was born!

I don’t use a lot of hair products these days, but I do love their hair gel, and Tweek Curl Cream. And their products are still made in Canada.

They offer flat-rate shipping across Canada and the United States for $8, and free shipping on orders over $100.

Canada Computers (Computers, Electronics, Accessories)

My husband discovered Canada Computers a couple of years ago when I needed a cable to connect a new monitor to my laptop. They’re a terrific alternative to the online giants for all your tech needs.

Founded in 1991 in Kingston, Ontario, they now have 42 stores across Canada, and a huge online store. Check out their website. I’m pretty sure you’ll find what you’re looking for.

Vessi (Waterproof footwear and apparel)

There aren’t many Canadian footwear brands, so I was intrigued by online ads for Vessi. When I noticed several friends wearing them, I asked how they liked them. They all said, “I love them!” One of my friends said she owns five pairs.

I needed a new pair of sneakers, so I took the plunge and ordered a pair of sneakers and a pair of black flats. They are still new, but the moment I put them on, I noticed how comfortable they were. They look great and actually feel like slippers. And, they are fully waterproof!

The shoes are on the pricey side, but the prices are competitive with many other shoe brands. They’re made in China, but the company is 100% Canadian owned.

C.R. Plastic Products (Outdoor furniture)

When we rebuilt our deck and patio two years ago, we chose outdoor furniture made by C.R. Plastic Products. This family owned and operated Canadian company is located in nearby Stratford, Ontario. They contribute to the circular economy by turning recycled plastic into beautiful outdoor furniture.

We love our CR Plastics furniture. It’s solid, durable, and looks great on our deck! And it’s backed by a 25-year warranty.

Other Canadian companies

Of course, there are many other Canadian companies that you’re probably already aware of. Here are a few alternatives for everyday products.

  • Sobeys and Loblaws for groceries
  • Goodness Me! for groceries, wellness, and personal care products
  • RONA for home improvements
  • Canadian Tire for home and auto needs
  • Indigo for books
  • Sunrise Records or Kitchener’s Encore Records for music

I firmly believe that the choices we make as consumers matter. Next time you need something, consider supporting one of these terrific homegrown companies.

Have you tried any of these brands? Are there other brands readers who want to buy Canadian might not know about? Drop me a comment below to let me know.
