If you’re looking for a decadent and delicious Christmas recipe, it’s your lucky day. Breton Brittle is a family favourite at our house. It’s a sinful combination of caramel and chocolate—two of my favourite things in the world!
I’m the first to admit I am not a big baker. I admire people who spend weeks baking a variety of Christmas cookies, squares, candy and other treats. I love delicious homemade baked goods but I just never seem to have the time to bake. Christmas is the one exception to this. I do make the effort to make at least a few favourites every year. Breton Brittle is always at the top of the list.
About 25 years ago, I worked with someone who used to make this and bring it in to work. Everyone at work went crazy for it so of course we had to have the recipe. I’ve been making it ever since.

It’s easy … and delicious
This recipe is right up my alley! You need just 4 ingredients and it takes about 15 minutes to make, start to finish.
If you want to give it a try, put these on your shopping list:
- Breton Original crackers. Some people make this recipe with saltines or graham wafers instead but I prefer the Breton crackers. They give the brittle a nice light crispy texture.
- Milk or semi-sweet chocolate chips. I prefer milk chocolate but semi-sweet works well, too. I tried making it with white chocolate chips once and it was a big fail! White chocolate doesn’t melt and spread as easily so stick with milk or semi-sweet.
- Brown sugar
- Butter

- Continue cooking over low to medium heat, stirring regularly, until it thickens.
- Carefully pour the mixture over the crackers.

- Remove the tray from the oven and sprinkle chocolate chips all over.
- Once the chips start to melt, spread the chocolate with a knife to cover.
- Cool for a few minutes and then put in the freezer to set.
- Break up into pieces.
- Enjoy!
My family loves this, so I have to stash it in the freezer so it doesn’t all disappear before Christmas. But, it’s so easy to make, we can always make more. It also makes a great gift in a decorative tin.

I think I want to try this! I get to have someone over for Christmas this year, which is foreign territory for me, so this would be a fun treat to make 🙂 Do you think a fridge would be cold enough to cool this? I don’t know if I’d have room in my freezer, so have to think on that part.
It’s my favourite Christmas treat—and so easy to make. Yes, you could definitely store it in the fridge. I put it in the freezer to get hard enough to break up, but after that it doesn’t need to be frozen.
I will try it for my two kids (hubby and baby) but you know how I feel about chocolate! Lol
It is delicious and very addictive.
