I’ve never been a big fan of poetry but when I put together my 60 before 60 list, I decided to challenge myself to try some different forms of writing. Writing a poem was one of the things on that list. As I sipped my tea and watched the sun rise in Campbell River one morning, I was inspired to sit down and write.
About Campbell River
Campbell River is one of the places we stayed during our recent trip to Vancouver Island. It is the island’s third largest city with a population of just under 40,000. If you’ve sailed up the inside passage on an Alaskan cruise, you would have sailed right past it. In fact, we saw three cruise ships sail by on our two-night stay.
Known as the salmon capital of the world, this beautiful gem is on the northern part of the island. For nature lovers, it offers endless opportunities for hiking, fishing, canoeing, bird watching, whale watching, and more.
If you’re planning a trip to Vancouver Island, visit the Campbell River Travel Site for more information about this wonderful place.
The inspiration
We stayed in a motel overlooking Discovery Passage, the narrow strait between Vancouver Island and Quadra Island. When I woke up on the first morning of our stay in Campbell River, I was greeted by bright light in the hallway. Thinking I had left the lights on when we went to bed, I got up to investigate. When I walked out into the hallway, I was greeted by this…
As another of my 60 before 60 goals was to watch a sunrise, I made a point of getting up early the next day. I made a pot of tea and sat on the balcony of our hotel as the sky was just turning a lovely cotton candy hue. As I waited and soaked up the beauty all around me, I was inspired to write a poem.
Campbell River Sunrise – A poem
Cotton candy sky
Seagulls flying by
“Caw! Caw!” they cry
As the sunrise greets the sky
Perched atop a tree
A bald eagle waits patiently
“Come on sun” says he
“I’ve got places to be”
Sunlight streams across the bay
The fishermen start their day
In their boats they sail away
A good catch will be their pay
As the day unfolds
Offering promises untold
Precious memories I’ll hold
Of the sunrise pure and gold
It’s time to say goodbye
Like the eagle, I must fly
So I’ll heave a little sigh
And enjoy the Campbell River high

Gorgeous pictures and lovely words xx
Thank you! 💚
Great job penning this verse, Michelle! I also like the photos – looks like a really lovely area. 🌞
Thanks Lisa. It wasn’t bad for a first attempt. It has taken almost 60 years for me to be inspired to write a poem. Hopefully the next one won’t take so long. And, yes, Vancouver Island is absolutely beautiful.
What stunning photos, Michelle, and paired with a beautifully inspired poem! <3
Thank you Layla. It was definitely a beautiful and inspring place.
Wow! Michelle, your poem is incredible! Your photos are also incredible! Well done! Cher xoxoxo
Thank you my dear! Not bad for a first attempt.
I think it would be so cool if you had a new blog segment, my dear! Cher xoxoxo
We’ll see if I get inspired again or if this is just a one-off. LOL
I hope it’s not a one-off, bit if it is, it’s a fabulous one! 😀

What a sweet poem. Color me impressed!
Thank you so much!
Thanks for sharing the view with a beautiful verse. I love Campbell River – I didn’t realize it was the third largest city on Vancouver Island. Gorgeous place that your poem and pictures reflect so beautifully!
Thanks Wynne. Campbell River certainly is a beautiful place.
This poem is lovely. I know I would love to visit that island. You are lucky to live in that part of North America.
Thanks Jamie. It really is a beautiful place.
I think it’s great you’ve given poetry a try, and what you’ve shared here is lovely. I like that you had so much inspiration from your trip (I must add watching a sun rise on my bucket list). It looks like such a wonderful area to spend some time in.
Thanks Molly. Yes, it’s good to stretch ourselves to try new forms of writing. Vancouver Island is definitely an inspiring place!
I love that you’re trying out different types of writing! That’s such a great goal to have on your list. And I love that my Island provided inspiration for your poem. Your poem has great observations which let me really experience what you’re seeing and your pictures are beautiful!
Thanks. I thought writing a poem would be a real stretch for me because I’m not much of a poetry person, even as a reader. But that beautiful sunrise made the words flow!
