To take the next step in my waste reduction journey, this year I decided to participate in the Plastic Free July Challenge. It was an eye-opening exercise – definitely a lot more difficult than I anticipated.
In this wrap-up post, I reflect on my observations and learnings from the month.
With just one week to go, the Plastic Free July Challenge has definitely been … a challenge! I’m sure you’re all getting the message from my first three updates that it has been pretty much impossible to fully eliminate single-use plastic.
With that in mind, this week I’m taking a different approach. Instead of the challenges, I’m going to focus on the wins. Each day, I’ll share the things that I am doing to reduce single-use plastic.
As I shared in last week’s update, the Plastic Free July Challenge is definitely a lot more difficult than I thought. I am learning a lot about how pervasive plastic is in our lives.
In the first 10 days, I came close a few times but I wasn’t able to get through a single day with no plastic. Will this be the week? Let’s find out.
In Plastic Free July Challenge – Week 1 Update, I shared how I wasn’t off to a great start. Eliminating single-use plastic was turning out to be a lot more difficult than I expected. I headed into week two hopeful, but not convinced, that I can do better!
We’re three days into the Plastic Free July Challenge and it’s time for my first progress update. Overall, the challenge is going pretty much as expected. It’s tough and I am learning that plastic is everywhere, even in the most unexpected places.

I can’t believe it’s almost July. In addition to being the start of the second half of the year, July is designated as Plastic Free July.
