Spring is here! I am more than ready to say good-bye to a harsh winter with an abundance of cold and snowy weather. Although the calendar says it’s spring, we’re probably still a few weeks away from consistently warm spring weather here in Ontario. Even so, just knowing the worst is behind us is enough to lift my spirits. With that in mind, today’s post has 18 simple ways to celebrate spring.
The arrival of spring always brings a sense of hope and anticipation. In addition to the joy of getting outdoors and enjoying some of the fun activities we’ve missed over the winter, this time of renewal is a chance to adopt some new habits.
18 simple ways to celebrate spring
Let’s look at some fun ways to welcome and celebrate spring.
Get outside for a leisurely walk
During the winter, I walk outdoors most days. When it’s cold outside, I bundle up and move quickly to get back indoors where it’s warm. As the weather gets warmer, I’m looking forward to longer, more leisurely walks.
Birdwatch
While you’re out walking, keep an eye out for bird species that have returned from their winter migration. I’ve already seen robins and cedar waxwings in the trees on our street. I can’t wait until the ducks reappear on our local pond.
Go for a bike ride
If you have a bike, get it out of the shed or garage, add some air to the tires and go for a spin.
Plant something
In colder, northern climates, it will be a couple of months before we can plant anything in our gardens. Late March is a good time to start seeds indoors. I planted my geraniums a few weeks ago and they’re growing well. This week, I’ll start my tomato and pepper seeds. Just seeing those little seedlings is enough to boost my mood.
Plan your garden
Speaking of gardening, now’s a good time to do some research and plan your garden. Make a list so you’ll have everything you need for spring planting.
Clean and declutter
Some people enjoy spring cleaning. I’m not a fan of cleaning any time of year, but spring is a good time to catch up on decluttering. When summer comes, you’ll want to be outdoors so tick a few items off your decluttering checklist now.
Get out your rain boots
Spring walks are often muddy and wet so make sure you get out your rain boots. I love that rain boots are now colourful and fashionable. They’re so much more cheerful than the old black wellington boots I wore when I was a kid.
Discover new walking trails
Make a list of local walking trails you want to explore this year. If you’re in Waterloo Region, here is a list of 12 local trails to get you started.
Find a charity walk or run to support
Many charities have walks and runs in the spring and summer. Support a good cause, and get some exercise, by signing up for a fundraising walk or run in your area.
Bring spring indoors – buy some potted bulbs
It may be too early to plant our gardens but that doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy some cheerful spring flowers. Buy some potted tulips, hyacinths, crocuses or daffodils to bring spring indoors.

Open some windows
After having the house closed up all winter, is there any better feeling than opening windows and letting the fresh air inside on the first warm day of spring? I can’t wait!
Learn something new
Spring is a time for new beginnings so commit to learning something new. Look for free courses on Coursera or LinkedIn Learning, or sign up for a workshop or course at your local community centre.
Decorate your house for spring
Easter is late this year but that doesn’t mean you can’t celebrate spring by putting out some decorations now. One of the simple things I do when spring arrives is take down my winter-themed shower curtains and hang the spring ones.
Get out your spring clothes
It’s time to say farewell to cozy winter sweaters and get out the spring clothes. Take the opportunity to do a little decluttering and get rid of things that don’t fit, or you no longer wear.
Enjoy some maple goodies
Maple is one of my favourite flavours. It’s delicious and so Canadian! At this time of year, there are so many delicious maple goodies—tarts, pies, cookies—in stores. Yum!
Visit a sugar bush
As the sap is flowing, many sugar bushes offer tours. It’s a great way to learn how maple syrup is made—and you’ll probably get to enjoy some samples.
Read a book outdoors
Pick a nice sunny day and head out onto your patio, or to a local park, and make a start on that book you’ve been wanting to read.
Adopt some new green habits
Finally, green is the colour of spring so pick one or two simple eco-friendly habits to start this spring. For inspiration, check out A year of monthly waste reduction goals.
I can’t wait to tick some of these things off my spring to do list as the weather warms up over the next few weeks.

Such a positive post! I am looking forward to the new changing season! Old tired winter needs to go now! 🙂 One of the reasons why I love Spring is it feels like the start of a new year (Winter always feels old, cold and drab, the continuation of last years weather) but Spring always feels like a new adventure! I love when it comes around because then you have a whole year of great weather (and the activities associated with great weather just around the corner) to look forward to! I love taking Charlotte on family hikes and discovering new nature hideaways! 🙂
Thanks! I agree that spring is a time for new beginnings. Everything just feels new and fresh and so much more exciting. And the return of the birds is always so cool. I saw red-winged blackbirds in the garden this morning. Now there’s a sign of spring.
It’s weird that you should say that about charity walks, I just got sent a short questionnaire about the British Heart Foundation organising summer walks to raise money at various different locations around the UK. I’m considering taking part, should they have dates and locations that work for me
It’s good for the soul to get outdoors in support of a good cause. In December, I did the HoHoHoliday 5K with some friends from work in support of Make A Wish Canada. It was a lot of fun!
That can’t have been easy to do in December in Canada. How snowy was?
So many great options that are no cost or low cost. Spring is definitely a time to get outside and celebrate life.
Yes, definitely. It’s wonderful to savour the great outdoors after being cooped up all winter.
Spring is such a wonderful time to embrace the outdoors and start connecting with nature in its fresh, abundant state! I love your ideas for celebrating spring as it erupts into bloom. 🥰
Thanks Jaya. I think everyone can benefit from more outdoor time. It’s good for the soul.
Spring is my favourite season. It’s sunny at the moment in the UK and it’s so nice to be outside.
It is nice to get outside. Our weather is all over the place, but that is March in Canada!
All great ideas, and some I’ve started doing myself!
Thanks Kim. Spring is such a joyful time and there are so many easy ways to celebrate spring. Just getting more fresh air without having to bundle up is a delight.
