Cool summer reads in my July 2026 blog roundup

August is here so it’s time for my July 2026 blog roundup. Along with a summary of my writing activity for the month, my July 2026 blog roundup has terrific posts on U.S. tax rules impacting Canadian snowbirds, poetry for a planet in peril, and the importance of memoirs.

Happy reading!

Cool things I read in July

Since publishing my first monthly roundup at the end of 2020, it has been an honour to introduce you to some of my favourite bloggers. I started the roundup to say thank you to the blogging community and bring attention to talented writers who create inspiring and informative content.

Here are 3 pieces that captured my attention in July.

The Cross-Border Retirement Traps Canadians Don’t See Coming – Financial Independence Hub

Most Canadian snowbirds I know mistakenly assume they can spend 182 days a year in the United States and still retain their Canadian tax status. Unsurprisingly, the US government plays by different rules. This enlightening post is a must-read for anyone considering a winter home in the sunny south.

The 182-day rule people repeat is a Canadian idea, tied to provincial health coverage and Canadian residency. The IRS doesn’t use it.

Poetry to Save a Planet in Peril – Deborah J. Brasket

It has been a difficult summer for our planet. You have to wonder how long people can continue to deny the impacts of climate change. In this sad but inspiring post, Deborah shares three poems that serve as poignant reminders of what’s at stake.

Once we had a welcoming hospitable planet where oceans didn’t swallow seaside cities, and floods didn’t drown waving wheat fields.

Memoirs Matter – Victoria Ponders

Writing is a wonderful way to help us make sense of our thoughts and feelings. If you’ve ever been tempted to capture your life story, you’ll love this terrific post from Vicki. She shares thoughts on why memoir writing matters, how she knew the time was right to write her memoir Surviving Sue, and how writing it helped her process and heal past trauma.

Fretting about worthiness and value = borrowed problems. Barometers and measuring sticks set by someone else. If you’re serious about writing for wellness, you’re the only critic who matters. Sit down and write.
