It’s December and the festive season is in full swing. At this magical time of year, the material aspects often distract us from what really matters. This year, let’s get back to basics and focus on simple holiday joys. I’ll get things started and, for the next three Sundays, I’m turning The Sunday Spark over to the little things that make your holiday season special.
Whether you celebrate the Winter Solstice, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or Festivus, join me in spreading some holiday cheer and refocusing on the simple things that make the season sparkle.
To get the conversation going, I’ll share three simple holiday joys of my own. Join in the conversation and leave a comment below with your simple traditions and holiday joys. I’ll include them in an upcoming Sunday post, along with a link to your blog.
Michelle’s simple holiday joys
Christmas music
I’m a music lover! At this time of year, nothing energizes me and brings a smile to my face more than putting on my Christmas playlist and singing along. I listen to Christmas music any chance I get, and I love to hear holiday music in stores when I’m shopping. And I especially enjoy choir practice this time of year as we prepare for the Christmas celebrations.
Going for a walk to look at the neighbourhood Christmas lights
In recent years, we’ve noticed a lot more people decorating their homes with exterior lights and decorations. In fact, we have a neighbour who puts on such an extensive display, he could give Clark Griswold a run for his money. Day or night, I smile every time I walk or drive past his house.
We love to bundle up and go for a walk around the neighbourhood to look at the lights. For a change of pace, sometimes we hop in the car and drive to a different neighbourhood to look at their lights. Add in a fresh blanket of snow, and the sight is even more magical.
Peaceful mornings by the Christmas tree
As an early riser, I’m always the first one up in our house. It’s a peaceful time and usually my most creative and productive time of the day.
One of my favourite things to do is turn on the Christmas tree lights when I get up and sit quietly by the tree while I sip my morning tea.
What are your simple holiday joys?
Now it’s your turn. Tell me about your traditions and simple holiday joys in the comments below and I’ll include them in an upcoming edition of The Sunday Spark. Let’s spread some cheer and be grateful for the simple things in life.

I love all of your traditions, Michelle! I love watching, “A Child’s Christmas in Wales.” That brings me so much joy and feels ‘like Christmas’ to me.
Thanks Cher! I don’t think I have seen that one. I will have to watch for it. Didn’t your dad love watching “A Christmas Story”?
Thank you, Michelle! Yes, you are right, he sure did! Cher xoxoxo
Seeing decorations with my daughter. Watching my favorite Christmas movies. Ginger bread.
Oh yes to all of those! What’s your favourite Christmas movie, LA?
The 1951 British version of a Christmas carol
Not sure if I’ve seen that one! I’ll have to look for it.

Love this…as a fellow early morning person, I love the quiet and holiday lights in the morning are delightful. Thanks for the prompt to reflect on the non-material aspects of joy in the season, Michelle. So good! 🥰
Yes, there’s something magical about getting up in the morning when the house is quiet and being the first to experience the Christmas tree lights.
