Hello from London! Mum and I arrived safely at Heathrow on Thursday morning. When we were making plans for our first full day in London on Friday, the forecast ominously predicted “the rainiest day ever in the UK”.
I’ve often noticed British weather forecasters must have some magical tools and never get it wrong. Their forecasts seem so much more precise than what we see in North America. Our forecasts report the possibility of precipitation in round numbers like 30% or 40%. In Britain, they report the chance of rain as 87% or 9%.
Bearing that in mind, we made rainy day plans and decided to see a show. We got tickets for the matinee performance of Back to the Future, The Musical at the Adelphi Theatre.
After a delicious breakfast near our hotel in South Woodford, we hopped on the tube into central London.
Back to the Future, The Musical
Back to the Future is one of my all-time favourite movies. Maybe I’ve been living under a rock but I didn’t know they had made a musical.
I’m always interested in the creativity it takes to turn a beloved film into a stage production. Some shows work better than others. This one was amazing! The effects were fabulous, and the music and acting were top notch. I loved how they incorporated references to recent events along with the best lines from the film like “Who the hell is John F. Kennedy?”—one of my favourites.
I highly recommend this show to any Back to the Future Fans. My mum had never seen the films, and she also loved it!
Dinner in Chinatown
When we emerged from the theatre after the show, lo and behold the sun was shining! It seems those precise forecasts aren’t all that accurate after all.
We hopped in a black taxi and asked the driver to take us to Chinatown. We enjoyed a fabulous dinner on a patio on bustling Lisle Street.
London at night
It was such a beautiful evening, so we decided to walk around a little before heading back to our hotel. We walked to Trafalgar Square and Picadilly Circus before hopping back on the Tube to South Woodford.

We stopped at a pub near our hotel for a quick drink and then called it a night.
We walked over 16,000 steps on Friday. It was a fabulous day, and we were so happy the weatherman got it wrong!
P.S. At age 90, my mum kept pace and managed the walking really well. I’ve said it before but I want to be just like her when I grow up!

Honestly. Mum is such an inspiration. She’s been walking her whole life. I’ve always said that’s what keeps her young.
