Third quarter update on my 60 before 60 list

With less than three months to go until my 60th birthday, it’s time for another update on my 60 before 60 list. At the halfway point in January, I was ahead of schedule. Read on to find out how much progress I made in the 3rd quarter of my 60th year.

About my 60 before 60 list

In July, I celebrated my 59th birthday. As another milestone approached, I decided to do something a little fun and different in my 60th year. I made a list of 60 things I wanted to do before my 60th birthday and shared it here to keep myself accountable.

In my first 60 before 60 update, I reported I had already completed 26 of the 60 items. At the halfway point, I was still ahead of schedule with 39 out of 60 tasks checked off the list.

Perhaps it was the winter blahs or just the general busyness of life, but momentum slowed significantly in the third quarter. This will be a short update.

Michelle’s 60 before 60 list – Third quarter update

Health and wellness

#20 – Try reflexology. I completed this one in early April and it was wonderful. Read about my experience in Reflexology and its benefits for your health.

Leisure

#35 – Hike 20 new trails. After being stalled at 19 through the winter, I finally got this one done in early April. Here are some photos of a few of the trails I’ve visited.

Personal & Spiritual Growth

#44 – Do the Alpha Course. Although there are still two weeks to go, I’m counting this one as done.

Nine months in, I’m behind schedule

I had nothing new to report this quarter in the Everyday Life, Food & Drink, Green Living, Home, Learning, Life goals, Music, Travel, Career, and Writing & Blogging categories.

So after a great start, I completed just 3 items in the third quarter of the year, bringing my nine-month total to 42 out of 60. I’ll give it my best shot in the last quarter, but some of the remaining items could be problematic.

Here’s what’s left on the list:

  • Make a snowman. It’s the middle of April so this one is unlikely.
  • Watch a parade.
  • Pick berries.
  • Buy an outfit at a thrift store.
  • Start a walking group.
  • Attend a live fitness class.
  • Plant a pollinator’s garden.
  • Take an online course.
  • Complete another plain language course.
  • Complete retirement coaching certification.
  • Sign up for a course at the community centre.
  • Learn sign language.
  • Take a creative class.
  • Read 30 books. I’ve read 25 books so I’m well on my way.
  • Learn 3 songs on piano.
  • Perform at a live show.
  • See Cher in Chicago.
  • Write a short story.

Have you ever made a similar list as you approached a milestone? What would be on your list of things to accomplish before your next birthday? Drop me a comment below and let me know.

Hi there! I’m Michelle and I live in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. I am married with two young adult daughters. I’m a big fan of reducing waste, using less plastic, decluttering and simplifying life as much as possible.

  1. Hmm, percentage wise, it seems you are almost on track. I wonder if you could do another interpretation of a “snowman.” Styrofoam balls? Or play golf and get and “8” on a hole?

    1. Ooh, I like the way you think, Wynne! I’ll have to get creative on the snowman. My daugther made styrofoam snowman ornaments this past Christmas. I wonder if she has any supplies leftover. Stay tuned…

    1. Thanks Caroline. For some reason the captions didn’t show up in my photo gallery, but one of those photos was taken in England. Can you guess which one?

  2. Turning 60? Your just a kid. Wait until you get near 65 and the daily mail reminds you how fast that is approaching. Good luck on your list. It does sound like a fun thing to do.

  3. I think you’re doing really well with your list, Michelle. Even if you don’t get everything done before your birthday, you will have achieved a lot. I’ll turn 59 in September and you have me considering whether I should do something similar. I also think it’s maybe a good way to do some fun things in life, and to keep focused on things that are important. That said, I’m now asking myself why wait til September

    1. Thanks Brenda. I had never done a list like this before and it has been a lot of fun. If you start yours now, you’ll have an extra five months to get things done!

  4. First, I cannot believe that it’s been almost a year since you made that challenge! Time is flying! Does it feel that way for you? Maybe whatever doesn’t get accomplished you can add those things to a 65 things before 65 and give yourself a longer time span since you will soon be retired as well. Just roll the remainder of the list into a newly retired challenge 🙂

    1. I agree. Deb. The last year has just flown by! That’s exactly what I plan to do. I have a retirement “curious list” of things to explore and do. Anything that doesn’t get done by July will roll onto that list.

    1. Ha ha. That would be a fun challenge. Perhaps there’s an online snowman building class that involves a trip to the Arctic to practise what I learn. If I did that, I would definitely write a short story about it. You could be on to something, Vicki!

        1. That’s a good idea. Would make a change from Macy’s on Michigan Ave. By the way, that’s my friend Cher…not “the” Cher. Although I’m sure my friend Cher would insist that she is, in fact, “the Cher”. 😂

          1. Hilarious! I must’ve missed that important detail, but as you point out, “your Cher” should, perhaps, be the only one referred to by first name only! Friends first! 😜

I'd love to hear your ideas. Drop me a comment below.
