Earth day turns 50 – Join the celebration!

Tomorrow is Earth Day and it’s a milestone – Happy 50th Birthday Earth Day!

If you’ve been reading my blog for a while, you’ll know that my motto is “Progress Not Perfection”. It’s about every single person doing something small to reduce waste and live an eco-friendly life. Earth Day is a great opportunity to reflect on and learn about the impact of our actions on our beautiful planet.

15 ways to celebrate Earth Day

Our current social distancing requirements mean many of the usual events are going virtual. With that in mind, here is my list of 15 ways you can celebrate Earth Day 2020 – from the comfort of your home.

Earth in grass - 15 virtual ways to celebrate Earth Day
  1. Plant some seeds indoors. Although it still feels like the last frost is a long way away here in southern Ontario, outdoor growing season is coming!
  2. Watch an earth friendly documentary.
  3. Declutter your space and set aside some items to donate.
  4. Go for a walk outside.
  5. Share your climate change ideas on social media.
  6. Up your recycling game – Research what is and isn’t recyclable in your area.
  7. Make your food and coffee at home.
  8. Clean up garbage outside your home or in your neighbourhood.
  9. Post some photos online of beautiful places. Watch for some of my favourites tomorrow.
  10. Donate to an earth-friendly cause like a local conservation authority, Greenpeace, The World Wildlife Fund or the David Suzuki Foundation.
  11. Eat dinner by candlelight.
  12. Dry your laundry outside.
  13. Buy nothing.
  14. Switch to paperless bills and statements.
  15. Visit www.earthday.org for other ways to make your voice heard.

Although we’re going through a tough time right now, there is a silver lining for our planet. Fewer cars on the road, less planes in the sky and more people staying home can only have a positive impact on the environment. It also gives us a chance to rethink some of our consumption and start new habits that can make a difference

What are you doing to celebrate Earth Day? Tell us below.

Hi there! I’m Michelle and I live in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. I am married with two young adult daughters. I’m a big fan of reducing waste, using less plastic, decluttering and simplifying life as much as possible.
